Frédéric Michel was born at Thodure, diocese of Grenoble, December 6, 1814. Upon the completion of his seminary studies, he was ordained to the priesthood July 18, 1847 and immediately left for Notre-Dame de l’Osier where he took the habit the 24th of that same month. He made his oblation on July 25, 1848. On the 15th of that same month, he had been admitted to vows by the General Council. In the session’s report, the secretary general wrote that Father Michel “made his theological studies with distinction and, at the major seminary, was always regarded as an ecclesiastic of regular and pious life. During his novitiate, he never fell short of the reputation he had won for himself.”

He died at Notre-Dame de l’Osier on March 6, 1849. In a March 10 entry in his Diary, the Founder wrote this about him: “I have just learned of the death of Father Fredrick Michel. He was one of our most promising subjects. Not only was he filled with virtue, his virtuousness was well above average, brimming with talent and learning. He was a subject who was well-rounded in his formation. He had just finished the mission of Saint Bonnet where he had shown a great deal of zeal and great generosity. Father Lavigne who preached this mission with him wrote me that he conducted himself like a saint [...] I really do fear that what Father Lavigne dubbed whooping-cough was in reality an exacerbating cough and perhaps the beginning of pneumonia.”
