Antoine Arvel was born at Allos, diocese of Digne on February 2, 1822. On November 8, 1845, he entered the novitiate at Notre-Dame de l’Osier where he made his oblation on November 9, 1846. The General Council had admitted him to vows on October 21 of 1846. The report of this session tells us this about Brother Anthony: “According to the report from Rev. Fr. Santoni, this young man can be admitted to oblation as well. His conduct at the novitiate was marked by regular observance; his character is good. It is true that he does not seem to be very talented, but he is sufficiently endowed to make of him an ordinary member. The one problem that could arise in his regard is the fact that he is lame, but, in his case, this problem is not grave enough to prevent him from joining the Congregation…”

Brother Arvel studied theology with the scholastic brothers at the major seminary of Marseilles from the month of November 1846 until his death on January 29, 1848. He had received the tonsure on June 27, 1847.
