Augustin de Rolland was born at Échelles in the diocese of Chambéry, on January 27, 1836. He began his novitiate at Notre-Dame de l’Osier on October 7, 1853 and made his oblation there on October 8, 1854. He studied philosophy and theology at Montolivet from 1854 until his ordination on January 30, 1859. In his reports, Father Mouchette, moderator of scholastics, judged this young man rather positively, an individual he found to be as yet a bit immature and shy, but assiduous in his duties, virtuous and regular in observance. In his notes on some of the scholastic brothers, Bishop de Mazenod wrote: Concerning Rolland: “From his earliest youth, attraction for the foreign missions. This attraction continues. He is gentleness incarnate. He is a delightful youngster.”

He received three obediences: Notre-Dame de l’Osier (1859-1864), Aix (1864-1865) and Rennes (1865-1869). He preached missions and retreats continually. In 1869, he asked permission to leave the Congregation to enter the Carthusian monastery at la Grande Chartreuse. He left on March 22, 1870 to work as a diocesan priest.
