Singing with Joy the Coming of the Lord!

Scholastics Singing at the Gregorian University

The month of December is a month filled with much joy in celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Celebrations of joy are often expressed in songs. Every year, the Gregorian University gives an opportunity to students of different colleges and institutions to share the joy with the entire university community by singing Christmas carols. The International Scholasticate community, after some weeks of rehearsals, was the first group to sing Christmas carols to the university community. With songs, we expressed our hope and joy for the coming of our Lord Jesus.

Christmas Games

Aside from songs, the community enjoyed the Christmas season together, through games organized by the sports committee headed by scholastics Norbert and Chiko. Games included table tennis, basketball, volleyball, playing cards and chess. Winners received their simple tokens as prizes during the Christmas party. We thank everybody for their participation, for exerting their efforts and for making this Christmas a time of fraternity.

Merry Christmas!

On the 25th of December, the community gathered to celebrate the Holy Eucharist of the Nativity of our Lord. This was followed by the lunch shared with the General House community. The evening of that same day, we shared a supper prepared by some scholastics. Immediately after the meal, a program was organized to celebrate the community Christmas and the birthdays of Fr. Roberto (the scholasticate superior) and scholastics Emmanuel, Auguste, and Norbert. The program included the visit of Santa Claus to award the winners of the Christmas games. The joy of the community was expressed in songs, games and sharing of gifts among the community members.

In Vallada for the New Year

After Christmas, some scholastics started their retreat in preparation for perpetual vows. Others went to Vallada, in northern Italy, to celebrate the New Year with some Italian families associated with the Oblates. In the midst of the cold and the scarcity of snow, their New Year was marked by prayer and decorated by the beauty of the mountains and love of those families with whom they shared the season.

Profession of Perpetual Vows

The celebration of Christmas reached its climax with the Solemnity of the Epiphany. On January 6, six of our confreres made their final profession of vows at the General House Chapel before Fr. Eugene King, OMI, Vicar General of the Congregation. The following scholastics made their perpetual profession:

  • Jean-Luc Bourdeau (Haití)
  • John Thomas David (India)
  • Auguste-Noel Kajingulu (D. R. of Congo)
  • William Makhebesela (Lesotho)
  • Patrick Maboee Matsau (Lesotho)
  • Norbert Johannes Wilczek (Germany)

  • Auguste, Patrick, John, Fr. King, William, Jean-Luc, and Norbert

After the celebration, a meal was shared at the General House refectory. Shortly afterwards, a thanksgiving program organized by the scholasticate community followed. To our confreres, our wishes and prayers for their journey in the footsteps of Saint Eugene de Mazenod.
