Joseph Beaulieu was born at Saint-Rambert-sur-Loire, in the diocese of Lyon, January 12, 1819. He was already a seminarian when he began his novitiate on May 21, 1844 at Notre-Dame de l’Osier where he made his oblation on May 25, 1845. Bishop de Mazenod ordained him to the priesthood in Marseilles on December 20, 1845.

For a short time he worked at Notre-Dame de l’Osier and in the course of the summer of 1846, he followed the course in eloquence given by Father Vincens at Notre-Dame de Parménie. During the summer of 1847, he was sent to Notre-Dame de Bon Secours. Bishop de Mazenod advised Father Dassy, the superior, to put this young priest in charge of teaching and forming a few of the juniors received in this house. In the month of August in 1848, he struck up a friendship with a young lady and was denounced for “acts of a most serious contravention of morality.” August 21, he was expelled from the Congregation by the General Council. He subsequently remained in the diocese of Marseilles and died at Rouet on September 9, 1849.
