Pierre Julien Besson was born at Marsanne in the diocese of Valence on September 20, 1832. He began his novitiate at Notre-Dame de l’Osier on December 24, 1853. He then pronounced annual vows at Montolivet on December 25, 1854 in the presence of Father Tempier. He pronounced his five year vows before Father Mouchette on December 25, 1855 and made his perpetual oblation on February 17, 1856 before Bishop de Mazenod. He was admitted to vows in the General Council session of February 1, 1856, saying that this brother was well known to the priests of the council and that the superior of Le Calvaire had provided good information about him.

In the Personnel register of 1862-1863, we find written after his name: “The brother was accepted into the Congregation after having done his military service. He possessed all the qualities to render first class service: physical qualities, intellectual qualities; he even had a fervent prayer life. Rev. Father Procurator General employed him in some matters demanding trustworthiness for a while. He was siezed with a complete revulsion for his vocation. He was sent to the school in Vico where he did a bit of schooling. Finally in 1860, he obtained dispensation from his vows and then he married.”
