Jean Pierre Bonifaci was born at Orto in the diocese of Ajaccio on July 17, 1835. After having finished his classical studies at the church school in Vico, he began his novitiate at Notre-Dame de l’Osier on August 14, 1857 and make his oblation at Montolivet on October 21, 1858. At the novitiate, Father Vandenberghe, the master of novices, judged him “brimming with common sense and good will,” “upright, with a genuine prayer life,” “filled with zeal,” with “an excellent will,” and a “perfect conduct.” He was sorry about the fact that this novice’s health was feeble, that he had “no manners and no upbringing,” was “negligent with regard to his personal appearance,” “a little harsh as much toward others as toward himself,” etc.

Sent to Montolivet in October of 1858, he was immediately subject to vomiting blood. The doctor diagnosed an advanced case of pulmonary consumption. Scholastic brother Bonifaci died on November 17, 1858.
