Antoine Calmettes was born at Peyret, diocese of Albi, August 15, 1811. He studied at the minor seminary of his diocese and completed one year of theological studies before beginning his novitiate at Aix on December 27, 1834. Father Casimir Aubert, the novice master at the time, judged he was sufficiently gifted and well enough prepared to allow him to make his oblation at Marseilles on December 27, 1835. Notwithstanding, he wrote in his report on Brother Calmettes: “His judgment which is not bad in itself is, nonetheless, on occasion derailed by the great impressionability of his character.” After six months spent with the scholastic brothers at the major seminary at Marseilles, Bishop de Mazenod dispensed him from his vows on June 11, 1836 for various reasons set out in the Register of expulsions and of dispensations. Among others, we read that Brother Calmettes “has constantly given proof of his inaptitude either for the sublime ministry to which we are dedicated, or yet again for the regular life and the most essential duties of community life…”
