François Carli was born at La Colla in the diocese of Ventimiglia on July 26, 1836. He began his novitiate at Notre-Dame de l’Osier on May 17, 1854 and made his oblation there on May 19, 1855. Based on the “generally favourable” notes of Father Vandenberghe, the master of novices, the General Council admitted him to vows in their session of April 13. However, Father Vandenberghe expressed some doubts as to the abilities of this brother. After a few months at Montolivet, he was sent to Vico in January of 1856 to take classes in the last year of the classical course at the church school directed by the Oblates. On his return in 1857, Father Mouchette, the moderator of scholastics found him more open than in 1855, but more scattered, always idiosyncratic, lazy and unwilling to acknowledge his failures. In his 1858 report, Father Mouchette wrote: “Always a singular personality. In certain circumstances he shows a certain ability, in others he seems to be a complete cipher, he is lacking application in his work; I always believe that he is failing in his prayer life.” In 1859, Father Mouchette still harboured doubts about the attitudes and the abilities of this brother. Then, he added: “We were unable to get anything out of him. Sent away, he was accepted at the monastery of La Trappe.”
