James Dunkley who was born in Findon, Hampshire, England on 2 October 1818. He began his novitiate in Maryvale on 14 August 1949, taking his first vows towards the end of 1850. He was admitted to first vows by the General Council on 4 September 1850, with the following note: “Brother Dunkley, an Englishman, a member of the Maryvale house; He finished his novitiate on 18 August last; an excellent candidate, docile, a good cobbler, available for any kind of work, pious. Admitted to vows for one year.”

According to the British Province Personnel for 1853, the brother was cook and cobbler in Galashiels, Scotland. An entry in the Codex Historicus of Lys Marie, Sicklinghall, for December 1852, names him as one of the founding members of the community in Galashiels. He probably made his final vows there on 17 February 1854. The superior apparently forgot to seek the authorization of the General Administration and to notify it subsequently of the profession. As a result the Brother did not receive his oblation number, which should have been 365 b. In the Congregation Personnel 1862-1863, after his name it is written: “In 1862 the British Provincial Council sought the dismissal of this Brother as his conduct was not satisfactory. The dispensation was granted on 19 November 1862, however, in view of his most earnest promises, the dispensation was not executed but, during the visit of Very Reverend Father Superior General to England, in May 1863, this brother as a member of the Liverpool house was again guilty of misconduct and was sent away.” At that time it was noticed that he did not have an oblation number and was given the number 564.
