Victor Joseph Giroud was born in Bessins in the diocese of Grenoble, November 1, 1823. He began his novitiate at Notre-Dame de l’Osier on May 4, 1845 and, according to the Register for taking of the habit, he pronounced his first vows at Marseilles May 5 [?]. In the Register of the General Council, May 6 is the date given for his admission to vows. The Secretary General wrote: “This young man, from the time of his entry into the Congregation, was so faithful in his regular observance and displayed such happy dispositions that the Master of Novices who had been asked for one of the brothers from l’Osier for the house at Le Calvaire, did not have the least difficulty in offering him in preference to all the others even though he only had six months of novitiate. Since he has been in Marseilles, he has continued to edify the community by his prayer life and his religious virtues. His character is gentle and easy-going, his health is sturdy enough. He is a little slow, but he loves to work…”
Brother Giroud died shortly after his arrival at Marseilles. We do not know the nature of his illness. In the October 15, 1846 entry of his Diary, Bishop de Mazenod sums up a letter written to Father Magnan at Ajaccio and writes: “Father Aubert was not able to leave the side of Brother V. Giroud, the Brother at Le Calvaire, who just died yesterday evening and for whom you will have to offer the suffrages prescribed by the Rule since he died as a religious and as a very holy religious. He made his perpetual vows when he received Holy Viaticum.”
