Louis Lestrait was born at Voires in the diocese of Besançon, November 1, 1831. According to the first handwritten personnels he began his novitiate at Notre-Dame de l’Osier on January 22, 1860, but his name does not appear in the Register of the taking of the habit of that house. We do have his formula for perpetual oblation which took place February 17, 1861 in the presence of Bishop H. Guibert, Archbishop of Tours. He had come to Marseilles to visit Bishop de Mazenod who was ill. Brother Lestrait’s name subsequently appears hardly four times in Missions O.M.I. It enables us to say that he was in Aix in 1878; then, he was sacristan at Le Calvaire in Marseilles from 1878 to 1880 and at Notre-Dame de la Garde from 1880 until his death on March 11, 1897.

In the Codex Historicus of the house of Notre-Dame de la Garde, on the date March 7, 1897, we see that Brother Lestrait, already very ill, fell unconscious and that on March 11, “that same brother, having almost never regained consciousness and almost without any suffering, breathed his last without a tremor.”
