Adolphe Maxé was born in Autreville in the diocese of Nancy on April 30, 1832. After a year of philosophy at the major seminary of Nancy, he began his novitiate at Notre-Dame de l’Osier on October 31, 1854 and made his oblation there on November 1, 1855. He was admitted to vows in the General Council session of September 25 of that year. In his report of that session, the secretary wrote: “The report provided by Rev. Father Vandenberghe about this novice presents him as a good candidate in every regard: an enlightened and solid prayer life, sincere love of his vocation, perfect fidelity to all the obligations of the Rule, above average talent and sound health.”
Scholastic brother Maxé spent a few months studying theology at Montolivet scholasticate. In his reports, Father Mouchette, the moderator of the scholastics, wrote among other things: “1855, excellent religious, brimming with good will. Health very frail. Gentle in character, calm, always on an even keel […]; 1856, this is a beautiful soul, would that the community would follow his lead! Gone to Osier for reasons of health.”
In the Personnel Registry of 1862-1863, we find written under scholastic Brother Maxé’s name: “An angel in virtue and prayer. Endowed with a rare humility, adorned with the most well-favoured dispositions which made him beloved of God and men. He was a sweet perfume for the novitiate. Struck down by illness as a result of some rashly chosen work, he was unable to return to the scholasticate. He returned to Notre-Dame de l’Osier where he died April [22], 1856. In 1861, his bones were transferred from the parish cemetery to the community’s cemetery. His body was found to be incorrupt.”
