Paul Mazade was born at Montélimar in the diocese of Valence on November 15, 1840. He entered the novitiate of Notre-Dame de l’Osier on October 3, 1859 and made his oblation at Montolivet on February 17, 1861. When he sent him off to the scholasticate, Father Vandenberghe, the master of novices, wrote on September 25: “This is a character who takes whatever shape we give him. He lets himself be led, drawn into things. Without wanting to do anything bad, people like this sometimes unknowingly do it. In this last period of time, I believe he developed a bit more backbone. Very ordinary ability, too much spinelessness.”
At Montolivet in 1860-1862, Father Mouchette, the moderator of scholastics, found him to be “good, regular in observance, except for the question of silence where his good resolutions often fail.” He added: “I consider him very fickle and superficial in his work.” At Autun for the 1862-1863 academic year, he was not admitted to the sub-diaconate because “he contributes nothing in class.” At the General Council session of July 22, 1863, “we judged that this candidate is unable to achieve the ends of the Congregation and we dispensed him from his vows.” The reasons alleged were: “An unremarkable lackadaisical life, tendency toward particular friendships; with regard to studies, a definite laziness and an ability, or rather a deficiency was noted…” In a letter to Father Fabre dated July 30 of that year, Brother Mazade begged Father General to keep him in the Congregation. In its August 5 meeting, the Council maintained its decision.
