Nicholas Murray was born in Dublin on 18 October 1819. He began his novitiate on 12 May 1847 at Notre-Dame de l’Osier and made his oblation on 15 August 1848, probably at Marseilles. After a year’s theology in the Marseilles major seminary, it seems he had difficulties and he continued his scholasticate formation in Maryvale in 1849-1850. On 13 June 1849 Bishop de Mazenod wrote Father Bellon in Maryvale: “I remain resolved to send to you…Brothers McDonagh, Dunne and Murray. It is for you to decide the future of the two last named.” On 29 December 1849 Father A. Tortel wrote Bishop de Mazenod: “Brother Sallaz with all his good will is beginning to wake up as is the case also with Brother Murray.” However, the secretary wrote in the minutes of the meeting of the general council held on 4 September 1850: “Getting on in years, after another year’s trial in theology has been judged definitely incapable; not feeling able to make the decision to change to the lay brothers, he asks that he be dispensed from his vows. The dispensation was unanimously granted”.
