At the General Chapter of 1850, the decision was taken to create Oblate provinces and vicariates. The appointment of provincials and vicars of missions took place when Bishop de Mazenod and Father Tempier returned from Rome in March of 1851, after having received approbation of the changes to the Rule. These appointments became official after the promulgation of the second edition of the Rule in 1853. This is the list of the provincials of France.
