Théodore Bourgeois was born at Gap, June 14, 1824. He entered the novitiate of Notre Dame de l’Osier August 14, 1844 and made his oblation there August 15, 1845. He was subsequently a scholastic brother at the major seminary of Marseilles from the month of August 1845 until his expulsion from the Congregation in the month of August 1848. The General Council report of August 7, 1848 gives several reasons for sending him away, especially for his strong tendency to seek out particular friendships and for saying things that were unbelievably tactless. Moreover, “he displays a discordant spirit which enjoys sowing discontent among others and carrying gossip, etc. For all these reasons, after mature reflection, the Council has decided unanimously that Brother Bourgeois would be dismissed from the Congregation.”
