James Stodddart was born in August 1840, in Galashiels, diocese of Edinburgh, Scotland. He was converted from Protestantism at the age of 13, received his First Holy Communion at Christmas 1853 and Confirmation on April 6, 1855. The Oblates in Galashiels hired him for a two-year period. He came to Sicklinghall on March 15, 1858 and began his novitiate as a coadjutor Brother on April 6. His first assignment was to take care of the refectory and the rooms. In autumn of that year, the first symptoms of tuberculosis began to appear. On January 15, 1859, he received the last sacraments and made his final vows in the presence of the community: juniors, brothers, scholastics and priests. He died on January 17, aged eighteen years and six months. His remains lie in the community cemetery.
