Brother Étienne Clavel was born at Biol, in the diocese of Grenoble, September 21, 1811. He was a weaver by trade. Initially, he was married, but when his wife died, he entered the Congregation at Notre-Dame de l’Osier on June 3, 1842 as an Oblate brother. He made his perpetual oblation at Notre-Dame de Lumières on February 17, 1845.

He spent his Oblate life at Notre-Dame de l’Osier and Notre-Dame de Lumières in the role of cook, gardener, in charge of the laundry or as porter. He was considered a very good religious, united to God, always willing to give a helping hand and always smiling. Towards the end of this life he suffered from rheumatism and had to walk with the help of a cane. He died at Notre-Dame de Lumières on June 3, 1874 after having received with devotion the Sacrament of the Sick.
