André Laurent Clément was born in Gap on May 6, 1808 and took the habit in Aix on December 8,1825. He made his oblation in Marseilles on February 24, 1827 and was ordained to the subdiaconate at the hands of Bishop Fortuné de Mazenod on September 19, 1829.
In the August 25, 1830 session of the General Council, Father de Mazenod being absent, the decision was taken to grant him the dispensation he sought because of “a spirit of rebellion which he manifested on a number of occasions by formal acts of disobedience and even by criticizing the orders and the conduct of his superiors…” The decree of dispensation from vows, signed by the Founder, bears the date of September 15, 1830. The Founder wrote in the Register of the taking of the habit: “Expelled. Warned of the responsibility that weighs on him and on all of those who are expelled because of their own fault, he took no account of it, a fact which leads one to doubt the sincerity of the remorse that he expressed.”
