History of the Cause

The 6 “Oblate Martyrs of Laos” have been part of two different processes, due to the situation in the country of Laos,

The diocesan inquiry for Joseph Thao Tien and companions was opened in Nantes, France, on March 23, 2010. The witnesses to the deaths of the  Oblates Louis Leroy, Michael Coquelet, Vìncent Jean-Marie L’Hénoret, Jean Wauthier and Joseph Boissel were included in that inquiry. In 2011, that cause passed on to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Rome.

The cause of beatification for Mario Borzaga and Paul Thoj Xyooj was opened separately on the diocesan level, in Trent, Italy, on November 3, 2006. In 2009, these causes passed on to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Rome.

The decrees of Martyrdom for both causes were signed in May and June 2015. The Beatification of all 17 Laotian Martyrs took place on December 11, 2016 in Vientiane, Laos.
