Jacques Symphorien Reynier was born in Éguilles, diocese of Aix, August 22, 1793. He was already a priest when he began his novitiate in Marseilles, August 11, 1827. He did a little ministry in the chapel of Le Calvaire and made his vows November 1, 1828.
He soon received his obedience for the house in Nîmes where he joined Father Guibert who had been his novice master until the beginning of 1828. In June 1829, Father Moreau, who was acting superior in the place of Father Honorat, superior at Nîmes, wrote to the Founder to inform him of “grave faults” committed by Father Reynier, “tending to compromise the honour of the society.” A tendency to permit himself to take liberties with women had already been noted when Father Reynier was at Le Calvaire. In their June 13, 1829 meeting, the General Council decided to expel him, dispensing him from his vows. Beside his name in the Registry of the taking of the habit, the Founder wrote: “expelled in disgrace.
